The book challenge

A new year, a new challenge. I used to read a lot. Ask anyone who's helped me move once, and they'll quickly warn you about those boxes of books - those back-breaking darn boxes they had to carry up the stairs.

And though in recent years I haven't had the time to read like I used to in the past, I'm convinced it's only a questions of (poor) time management. And so I've set myself a challenge, one I can achieve, as long as I stick to the plan. Having just finished reading The Years of Rice and Salt, I challenge myself to...

...read 12 books in the year. One every month. A few pages a day.

Seems rather simple right! Well consider that I'm also a gamer: Xbox (no 360 yet) and PC. And that's where a lot of my spare time is going these days. And I still want to keep that up. That, and both my personal blogs; this one, and my gaming blog, CrazyKinux's Musing.

Add to that, all the magazines I read in a month (Computer Power User, Wired, Business 2.0, National Geographic, Games for Windows, The Economist, Electronic Gaming Monthly, eWeek), my daily dose of web browsing, work, life, commuting, and the soon to be raising of our first child, and you quickly get the idea.

But I'm convinced that I can do this, and have time for the rest of it. We'll just have to see!! So here is the list of the books (in their correct order), that I'll be reading this year:

  1. Polaris, by Jack McDevitt
  2. Secrets of the Samurai, by Ratti & Westbrook
  3. Brightness Reef, by David Brin
  4. Collapse, by Jared Diamond
  5. Blood and Memory, by Fiona McIntosh
  6. A Fire in the Sun, by George Alec Effinger
  7. The Exile Kiss, by George Alec Effinger
  8. Artificial Minds, by Stan Franklin
  9. Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson
  10. Diamond Mask, by Julian May
  11. What Remains to be Discovered, by John Maddox
  12. Gardens of the Moon, by Steve Erikson
Well there you have it. That's the list.

Now off to some reading, if I want to get through this!!
